Michaela is a litigation and dispute resolution specialist, with more than 20 years’ experience advising clients across a range of industries and sectors. She provides clients with high quality advice and strong representation.

Full Biography

During her career, Michaela gained valuable overseas experience, initially as legal counsel for a leading European investment bank, and then with one of the world’s largest offshore law firms, specialising in commercial litigation and multi-jurisdictional disputes. This commercial experience enables Michaela to bring a strategic approach to any dispute.

Michaela regularly represents clients in civil and commercial litigation, in a range of Courts and specialist tribunals. Her practice includes property disputes, contract claims, negligence claims, construction disputes, and family protection/estate litigation. Michaela is also a relationship property and trust litigation specialist, representing and advising clients on asset protection, relationship property and trust issues. She has acted on complex relationship property cases including those involving business, trust and farming structures as well as cross border issues involving overseas assets.

A strong negotiator Michaela has extensive experience representing clients and achieving favourable outcomes in mediations and other alternative dispute resolution forums.

Michaela is an employment law specialist. She represents both employer and employee clients on a full range of contentious and non-contentious matters, and has appeared in the Employment Court, Employment Relations Authority and MBIE mediations. Michaela also advises on restructuring, redundancies, and health and safety/workplace investigations. She works closely with the firm’s commercial team to provide employment and specialist litigation advice on commercial transactions.

With a special interest in professional negligence and disciplinary matters, Michaela acts for individuals across a number of professions. She was previously a member of the Law Society Otago Standards Committee. She also advises on insurance matters.

Recent Cases
  • Acting as New Zealand counsel for a Cayman Islands’ investment fund as a creditor of New Zealand company providing liquidity services, in respect of applications before the High Court in respect of cross applications for appointment of interim liquidators,  a stay, and appointment of replacement interim liquidator proceedings. This was in the context of enforcement and insolvency proceedings in numerous overseas jurisdictions for recovery of funds.
  • Acting for an insurance broker as defendant in High Court proceedings involving numerous defendants and third parties. Complex issues relating to losses arising from the Christchurch earthquake and failure of an insurer. Satellite litigation involved proceedings before the Employment Relations Authority and then Employment Court relating to an issue of whether a third party was an employee or contractor. Successful in the ERA and appeal to Employment Court settled. The main High Court proceedings were settled on favourable terms.
  • Acting for a trust as plaintiff in High Court proceedings seeking specific performance under an agreement for sale and purchase where the vendor failed to settle on the basis of competing claims as to the equitable interests in the property. Settled on favourable terms.
  • Acting in respect of complex relationship property and trust proceeding, defending applications to set aside a contracting out agreement and seeking recourse against trust assets. Complex issues involving high value assets.
  • Successful application in the High Court to set aside a statutory demand in the context of a complex construction dispute involving issues under the Construction Contracts Act 2002.
Overseas Litigation
  • Acted for two former trustees who were defendants in a £7m trust dispute brought by the current trustees of a Guernsey trust. Allegations of breach of trust by gross negligence and dishonest assistance.
  • Cross border litigation with proceedings in Guernsey, Russia and the British Virgin Islands. Acted for Guernsey company and its beneficial owner in respect of cross unfair prejudice applications between the shareholders of a Guernsey holding company which owned stocks in an eighty million dollar oil refinery in the Russian Federation.
  • Acted for Guernsey company and its beneficial owner in respect of both public (judicial review) and private law actions before the courts of Guernsey. Claim in respect of the release of approximately €40million held in client’s bank accounts in Guernsey. The central issue was the purpose of the Guernsey money laundering/consent regime and whether the FIS’ application of it was compatible with the customer’s rights under the European Convention on Human Rights.
  • Multi-jurisdictional dispute resulting in the claimants obtaining ex parte worldwide freezing orders up to $US75m in the High Court of England and Wales against 11 additional defendants. Applied for and obtained orders for the discharge of the worldwide freezing orders (in the courts of England and Wales, and Guernsey) and indemnity costs against the claimants.
  • Complex trust litigation acting for the professional trustee of a trust with net assets of approximately £20m, set up by the designer of a prominent international production to receive worldwide royalty income.

Warren is an expert in property, commercial and private client law. He graduated from the University of Otago in 2005 and has practiced in Dunedin since 2006.

Warren has a particular interest in all property matters including residential and commercial conveyancing, leasing, development, subdivisions, and financing as well as tax, asset protection, trust and estate advice.

Warren enjoys the challenge of solving problems and is known for taking complex issues and simplifying them for his clients by providing pragmatic and contextual legal advice that is solution focussed.

In addition to Warren’s legal work, he is a member of the New Zealand Law Society’s Property Law Section and is actively involved in the community where he sits on the boards of several charitable entities including the Otago Peninsula Trust, the Arai Te Uru Kokiri Training Centre, and the Otago Rugby Football Union.

  • Overseeing the centralisation of a well known national fashion label from individually owned stores into one central entity, including all aspects of leasing and financing.
  • Advising on all aspects of several multinational businesses operating through Limited Partnership structures.
  • Overseeing the amalgamation of several farming syndicates involving over $50m of assets.
  • Overseeing several well known green fields residential subdivisions across New Zealand ranging in size from minor to major subdivisions.
  • Advising on all aspects of several high density housing developments including negotiating the terms of private lender financing, the subsequent subdivision and sales.
  • Overseeing the restructure and creation of various private GP medical centres.
  • Advising nationally franchised business owners on the sale and purchase of their businesses.
  • Advising on and creating a locally based syndicate in the construction of the  new Dunedin Hospital.
  • Working with South Island councils and private clients in relation to Public Works Act acquisitions and expansions of significant council infrastructure.
  • Overseeing the implementation of a small North Island based franchise into a major New Zealand operation and its subsequent expansion into Australia and the United States.
  • Advising a start-up company regarding a capital raise to allow international growth, including structuring and intellectual property protections.

Charlotte specialises in civil, family and employment litigation and has represented both corporate and personal clients in several jurisdictions.

Working with clients to overcome issues they may be facing, Charlotte has a particular interest in commercial, family and employment dispute resolution. She regularly advises corporate clients with respect to dispute resolution and risk management including Court proceedings and mediation of high value claims.

Her in-depth knowledge and experience of contractual, commercial, family, estate and trust based disputes and jurisdictions gives Charlotte an edge when advising clients on risk management or helping them to achieve their desired outcomes.

Charlotte acts as a lawyer for subject person by Court appointment and has always had an interest in giving back to her community.

With more than a decade’s experience in governance from both a trustee and advisory perspective, Charlotte is currently a voluntary trustee of the Creative Arts Trust, ID Fashion Dunedin and the Otago Multiple Sclerosis Society Investment Trust. She has previously acted as a trustee for the Dunedin Budget Advisory Committee, the St Barnabas Trust and Stopping Violence Dunedin.

Although Charlotte specialises in litigation, she is also able to assist clients with conveyancing, estate planning, trust establishment/planning and other general and commercial ventures.

  • Acted for and defended against high value applications to the Court with respect to complex trust, company, relationship property and maintenance proceedings in several different local jurisdictions throughout New Zealand. Including matters involving farms, partnerships, companies as well as family and investment trusts.

  • Acted and successful in an application for International Without Notice Hague Convention and Border Alert application with respect to Care of Children matters.
  • Acted successfully in defending without notice applications for protection order under the Domestic Violence Act and without notice parenting orders.
  • Acted successfully for high net worth employment settlements achieving top band s123 compensation payouts.

Courtney is a solicitor in Reid Cooper Gray’s litigation and dispute resolution team. Courtney graduated from the University of Otago with a Bachelor of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in 2023 and was admitted to the bar in early 2024.

Courtney has strong analytical and drafting skills, and in her final years of study worked as a legal content writer, conducting research and writing legal content for a range of international publications.

Courtney has worked in various areas of law, including separation, relationship property, employment law, tenancy disputes, commercial disputes, trust law, human rights law, and family protection and estate litigation.

Micaela has over 20 years experience in law firms. She has a broad skill base, with extensive experience working alongside litigation lawyers as well as providing support on property and commercial transactions. Micaela undertakes a wide range of litigation tasks including drafting Court documents, preparing discovery and court bundles, liaising with the Courts and attending to filing and service. Micaela’s calm presence under pressure is a key strength, supporting both our clients and the Reid Cooper Gray team.

Sasha graduated from the University of Otago in 2022 with a BAppSc, majoring in consumer food science and minoring in human nutrition. Following graduation Sasha worked in a management role and then for another Dunedin law firm undertaking a variety of functions including trust accounting and compliance.

As a law clerk with Reid Cooper Gray, Sasha will provide support across the firm. She will work closely with the team supporting on property and commercial transactions as well as assisting litigation. She is looking forward to expanding her knowledge and skill base while still assisting with trust accounting and compliance.

Carolyn holds a key position at Reid Cooper Gray as our trust account and anti-money laundering administrator. She works closely with the team to ensure all compliance is completed in a timely manner and oversees the seamless operation of our trust account.
